GeoDrill, a leading name in geothermal drilling sector, has recently secured a significant contract for a groundbreaking project in Scotland. We were tasked with delivering 122 x 200m deep geothermal loops for HMP Scotland's innovative new prison, HMP Highland. The project's drilling phase kicked off in October 2023, with the first loop successfully installed.
Located on the outskirts of Inverness, this venture presented numerous challenges, with GeoDrill dedicated crews persevering through harsh winter conditions to provide a high-spec package for their client, GA Barnie, and principal contractor, Balfour Beatty.
The drilling process encountered particularly demanding geological conditions, including competent rock depths exceeding 50 meters. To address this, temporary casing was employed to facilitate drilling down to the required 200m depth. The installation, grouting, and pressure testing of loops followed.
A testament to their commitment, the GeoDrill teams worked tirelessly, even on alternative weekends, to help maintain project deadlines and ensure the successful completion of drilling operations. This project exemplifies GeoDrill's dedication to delivering innovative solutions in challenging environments.
